What Are the Effects of Not Wearing Sunscreen?

Skip the screen—not a big deal, right? Ummm... We all know we’re serious about the screen around here, but you might be surprised to find out why. ‘Cuz it’s not just about the risk of getting a burn (although we really, really hate that). From increasing your risk of skin cancer to making you age faster, skipping sunscreen can do a number on your skin. Here’s what you need to know about what happens when you’re not protecting yourself from those UV rays. And why we’ve always got a bottle within reach... in our pocket, in the glove box, in our beach bag, in our ski bag and more!

Skin Cancer

You guys know how this all started for us, right? Our community was getting chewed up by skin cancer, so we wanted to make something to protect our families and friends. So, we know a little too well one of the scariest consequences of not wearing sunscreen. According to the Cleveland Clinic, UV radiation from the sun causes direct damage to your skin cells, leading to DNA mutations that increase the chances of developing skin cancer. This includes serious conditions like melanoma, as well as more common forms like basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.  Wearing sunscreen daily can significantly reduce this risk by blocking those harmful rays.

Sunburn

It happens. Believe us, there’s no greater shame than walking into Sun Bum HQ on a Monday morning with a bright red sunburn. But it’s more than just discomfort. Sunburn is a sign that your skin has suffered damage from UV rays. Repeated sunburns can lead to more serious skin issues, like an increased risk of skin cancer, and cause long-term damage that your skin might never fully recover from. The worst part? Not even realizing how much damage is happening on cloudy days or during short outdoor trips, so sunscreen is always a must.

Premature Aging & Wrinkles

Want to keep your skin looking smooth and youthful? Skipping sunscreen won’t help with that. One of the key effects of not wearing sunscreen is premature aging. UV rays break down the collagen and elastin in your skin, which are the proteins responsible for keeping it firm and plump. Over time, this leads to wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin—making you look older, faster. So, if you want to keep your skin, SPF is your best friend.

Skin Discoloration

Skipping sunscreen can also lead to skin discoloration, like hyperpigmentation and sunspots. UV rays trigger your skin to produce more melanin, which can cause dark spots and uneven skin tone. These spots can be stubborn and stick around for years, becoming more difficult to treat over time. Sunscreen helps by preventing this process.

Leathery Skin

We love a vintage leather jacket... vintage leather skin on the other hand—not so much. If you constantly expose your skin to the sun without protection, you risk developing leathery skin. This condition, called solar elastosis, happens when UV rays break down the natural oils and moisture in your skin, causing it to become thick, dry, and tough. Wearing sunscreen regularly can help prevent this long-term damage and keep your skin soft and hydrated.

Sunscreen Usage Tips

Using sunscreen is key, but it’s important to do it right. Here’s how to make sure your slather-up routine is effective.

Choose the Right Sunscreen

Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, with at least SPF 30. If you’ve got sensitive skin, opt for a mineral-based sunscreen that includes ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

Apply Sunscreen Generously

Don’t be stingy! You need a shot glass worth of sunscreen to cover your entire body. Be sure to hit commonly missed spots like your ears, neck and the tops of your feet. For your face, use a nickel-sized amount to make sure you're fully protected.

Reapply Often

One of the biggest sunscreen mistakes is forgetting to reapply. You’ve got to slather up every two hours, and more often if you’re swimming or sweating. Don’t forget—if you’re spending time outside, sunscreen should be your go-to, no matter the weather.
